About Övörkhangai
Arvaikheer is the compact capital of Övörkhangai Province in central Mongolia, positioned on the route between Ulaanbaatar and the historic Orkhon Valley. Its broad tree-lined main avenue, provincial museum and nearby Gandan Muntsaglan Khiid monastery give the town a calm but distinctly Mongolian character.
The wider province holds some of Mongolia's most important heritage. The ancient capital of Karakorum at Kharkhorin, the Erdene Zuu Monastery and the Orkhon Valley Cultural Landscape, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, all lie within Övörkhangai. Arvaikheer's aimag museum displays fossils and artifacts from Kharkhorin and the surrounding steppe.
Around the central square, visitors find the provincial theatre, administrative buildings, shops and markets, while Gandan Muntsaglan Khiid stands about 1.5 km from the centre. The town serves as a practical base for day trips to Kharkhorin, Erdene Zuu, the Orkhon waterfalls and the Khangai mountain scenery to the north.
Arvaikheer is an important regional hub for administration, trade and livestock products, and Arvaikheer Airport links the area with Ulaanbaatar and Altai. Travellers commonly stop here en route between the capital and the attractions of central and western Mongolia.
For leisure visitors, Arvaikheer offers a relaxed introduction to provincial Mongolia and easy access to major cultural sites, while business and government travellers value it as the administrative centre of Övörkhangai.
