About Bayan-Ölgii

Ölgii is the capital of Bayan-Ölgii Province in far western Mongolia, set at around 1,710 metres in the high Altai Mountains. It is the administrative and cultural centre of Mongolia's Kazakh-majority region, which gives the town a distinctly Central Asian character different from much of the rest of the country.

Kazakh is widely spoken, and mosques, embroidery, traditional music and eagle-hunting customs are part of daily life. The Ölgii Central Mosque, with its minaret, and the provincial museum are central points for understanding the area's Kazakh heritage and local history.

The town itself is compact and practical, with a busy bazaar, small restaurants, guesthouses and surrounding ger districts. Beyond it, Altai Tavan Bogd National Park offers glaciers, alpine lakes such as Khoton and Khurgan, and Khuiten Peak, Mongolia's highest summit at 4,374 metres.

Ölgii is best known internationally for the Golden Eagle Festival held each autumn, when Kazakh eagle hunters gather in traditional dress to demonstrate the skills of their trained golden eagles. Spring Nauryz celebrations and the summer trekking season also bring visitors to the region.

As the main gateway to western Mongolia, Ölgii serves both leisure travellers heading into the Altai and business travellers working in regional services, trade or development projects. Its airport connects the town to Ulaanbaatar and, on seasonal routes, to destinations beyond Mongolia.
