About Ungheni

Ungheni is a border city in western Moldova, stretching for about 10 km along the east bank of the Prut River opposite Romania. It is one of the country's larger urban centres and an important railway and road gateway, with a compact centre built around Independence Square, the railway station and a long chestnut-lined promenade.

The city was first mentioned in 1462 in a charter of Stephen the Great under the name Unghiul. Its best-known landmark is the Eiffel Bridge, a steel railway bridge over the Prut designed by Gustave Eiffel and opened in 1877; it still carries rail traffic and remains a symbol of the city's border heritage.

Ungheni's central sights include the Saint Alexander Nevsky Cathedral, the History and Ethnography Museum, Central Park 'Micul Cluj' and the railway station, while the surrounding district offers wineries such as Crama Mircești and the protected forests of Plaiul Fagului Nature Reserve.

As a regional economic centre, Ungheni hosts a free economic zone, one of Moldova's largest railway junctions and growing EU-supported development projects. Its position close to Iași in Romania makes it a practical stopping point for cross-border business and trade.

For visitors, Ungheni offers a quieter, authentic Moldovan experience than the capital, with local cuisine, nearby wine tastings and easy connections to both Chișinău and Iași for leisure and business travel.
