About Transnistria

Tiraspol is the capital and second-largest city of Transnistria, a de facto state internationally recognised as part of Moldova, on the east bank of the Dniester River. Its wide boulevards, Soviet-era monuments and slower pace give it a distinctly different character from Chișinău, the Moldovan capital to the west.

Founded in 1792 on the orders of Alexander Suvorov as a Russian border fortress, Tiraspol later became the capital of the Moldavian ASSR and, after the early 1990s, the seat of the self-declared Pridnestrovian Moldavian Republic. That layered history is visible in landmarks such as Suvorov Square with its equestrian statue, the monumental House of Soviets fronted by a Lenin statue, and the Victory Memorial in Glory Park.

The compact centre is easy to explore on foot, anchored by October 25 Street, the Green Market and the Dniester embankment. Beyond the main square, visitors can see the Noul Neamț Monastery, the city's drama theatre, and Soviet-era murals and architecture, while the historic Bender (Tighina) Fortress lies just across the river.

Tiraspol's best-known local product is Kvint, the winery and brandy distillery operating since 1897, and its divin and wines are a highlight of local food and drink. Markets, cafés and restaurants serve Moldovan and Slavic-influenced dishes, giving the city a modest but distinctive culinary scene.

For travellers, Tiraspol is a compact destination for Soviet-heritage sightseeing and day trips, often combined with Bender and the wider Dniester region. Its role as the administrative and economic centre of Transnistria also makes it relevant for business and government-related visits.
