About Oaxaca

Oaxaca de Juárez is the capital of the state of Oaxaca in southern Mexico and one of the country's most distinctive colonial cities. Known for its pale green cantera stone buildings, shaded plazas and strong Zapotec and Mixtec heritage, its historic centre and the nearby archaeological site of Monte Albán were together declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1987.

The city grew from a Spanish settlement founded in the 16th century in the Valley of Oaxaca, long home to Zapotec and Mixtec civilisations. Baroque landmarks such as the Templo de Santo Domingo de Guzmán and the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Assumption stand alongside museums, former convents and the lively Zócalo, while Monte Albán and Mitla preserve the region's pre-Hispanic past just outside the city.

Much of Oaxaca's life centres on its pedestrian streets and markets. The Andador Turístico (Macedonio Alcalá) links the Zócalo to Santo Domingo and passes galleries, cafés and craft shops, while the Benito Juárez and 20 de Noviembre markets offer local produce, textiles and street food. Neighbourhoods such as Jalatlaco and Xochimilco add colourful murals, boutique hotels and a quieter residential feel.

Oaxaca is celebrated as a food destination, from its seven classic moles and tlayudas to quesillo, chocolate, chapulines and mezcal made in the surrounding valleys. Festivals such as the Guelaguetza in July, Day of the Dead in late October and early November, and the Noche de Rábanos in December draw visitors from Mexico and abroad.

As the state capital, Oaxaca also has a role in government, education and regional business, while tourism, crafts and hospitality anchor much of the local economy. Its walkable centre, artisan villages, archaeological sites and growing event calendar make it equally suited to cultural travellers, food lovers, groups and business visitors.

Oaxaca Travel Guide

Best Time to Visit

The dry season from October to May is the most comfortable period for exploring, with warm days and cool nights. Late October and early November are especially popular for Day of the Dead celebrations, while July brings the Guelaguetza festival and afternoon rain showers.

How to Get Around

Oaxaca's historic centre is compact and best explored on foot, with taxis, local buses and colectivos for longer trips. For Monte Albán, Mitla, Hierve el Agua and the artisan villages of the surrounding valleys, private transfers or organised tours are practical options.

Where to Stay

The Centro Histórico puts major landmarks, museums and markets within walking distance, while Jalatlaco and Xochimilco offer quieter streets, boutique hotels and cafés. The Reforma area has larger hotels and good access to main roads.

Food & Drink

Oaxacan cuisine is built around mole, tlayudas, memelas, quesillo, chocolate and mezcal. Try market stalls at the Benito Juárez and 20 de Noviembre markets, neighbourhood fondas, café terraces and mezcalerías across the centre.
