About Nuevo León
Monterrey is the capital of Nuevo León and the third-largest city in Mexico, set in a valley surrounded by the Sierra Madre Oriental. Known as the Sultan of the North and the country's industrial capital, it combines a modern business skyline with dramatic mountain scenery, most notably the Cerro de la Silla.
The city was founded in 1596 as Ciudad Metropolitana de Nuestra Señora de Monterrey. It grew slowly during colonial times and became an industrial powerhouse in the late 19th and 20th centuries, with steel, cement, brewing, glass and finance at the heart of its economy. Its industrial past is preserved at Fundidora Park, a former steel mill turned into a public green space.
Landmarks include the Macroplaza, one of the largest public squares in the world, the baroque Monterrey Cathedral, the contemporary art museum MARCO and the Santa Lucía Riverwalk, an artificial canal linking Fundidora Park with the city centre. Upscale San Pedro Garza García offers fine dining and shopping, while Barrio Antiguo keeps colonial-era streets and a lively nightlife scene.
As a major business centre, Monterrey hosts leading corporations, trade fairs and conferences, and its universities make it an important hub for education and innovation. Visitors can ride a cable car to the Obispado viewpoint, hike nearby national parks, watch football at Estadio BBVA and enjoy northern Mexican cuisine such as cabrito and machacado.
Monterrey's mix of industrial strength, mountain landscapes and regional culture makes it relevant for both business travellers and leisure visitors exploring northeastern Mexico.
