About Nayarit
Tepic is the capital and largest city of Nayarit, set in a mountain-ringed valley in western Mexico northwest of Guadalajara. Founded in 1531 by Nuño de Guzmán and later known as the birthplace of poet Amado Nervo, the city blends a compact historic centre with a growing cultural scene and a relaxed provincial atmosphere.
The heart of Tepic is its Plaza Principal and the neogothic Tepic Cathedral, dedicated to the Immaculate Conception. Nearby, the Museo Regional de Nayarit occupies a colonial house and traces local history from pre-Hispanic cultures to the Mexican Revolution, while the Museo de los Cinco Pueblos highlights the Cora, Huichol, Tepehuano and Mexicanero heritage of the state.
The historic centre is best explored on foot, with the Centro de Arte Contemporáneo Emilia Ortiz and the Casa Museo Amado Nervo among its cultural stops. About 15 minutes by car, the Barrio Mágico of Bellavista preserves a former textile-factory complex, and the forested Cerro de San Juan and Volcán Sangangüey frame the city's natural setting.
As the administrative and commercial hub of Nayarit, Tepic offers local markets, cafés and a modest live-music scene. Markets such as Juan Escutia and Morelos serve regional dishes including tamales de camarón, pozole rojo, aguachile and vampiro tacos, alongside fresh seafood influenced by the nearby Pacific coast.
For travellers, Tepic works as both a destination and a practical base. It sits between Guadalajara and the Riviera Nayarit coast and gives road access to Santa María del Oro lagoon, the El Elefante waterfall, the Puga aqueduct and the Aguamilpa Dam, while Tepic International Airport links the city to domestic routes.
