About Nouakchott-Nord

Nouakchott-Nord is the northern region of Nouakchott, the capital of Mauritania, and one of the three administrative regions that make up the city. Stretching across residential districts, markets and fast-growing suburbs, it is a practical introduction to everyday life in the Mauritanian capital rather than a single dense tourist centre.

The region was formed in 2014, when Nouakchott was divided into three wilayas, and it is administered from Dar-Naim. Its three departments, Dar-Naim, Teyarett and Toujounine, mix older neighbourhoods, planned housing and rapidly expanding peri-urban areas, with sand dunes pressing in on the eastern edge.

Daily life centres on neighbourhood mosques, small markets, schools and community facilities, while the wider capital's landmarks such as the Saudi Mosque, the National Museum and the busy Port de Pêche fishing harbour are within reach. To the east, the dune landscape around Toujounine offers a reminder of the desert that surrounds the city.

Nouakchott-Nord is part of the capital's continuing growth, with new roads, housing and solar energy projects changing the skyline. Nouakchott–Oumtounsy International Airport lies to the north of the city and makes the region a natural entry point for visitors arriving in Mauritania.

For travellers, the region offers a closer look at how most residents of Nouakchott live and work, away from the main hotels of the city centre, and it is a convenient base for reaching the airport, markets and the road network leading toward the desert interior.

Nouakchott-Nord Travel Guide

Best Time to Visit

The cooler months from November to March are the most comfortable time to explore Nouakchott-Nord, with milder temperatures and less intense heat. Summer is very hot, and dusty harmattan winds can appear in the dry season, so plan outdoor visits for the morning or late afternoon.

How to Get Around

Shared taxis and minibuses connect Dar-Naim, Teyarett, Toujounine and central Nouakchott, while private taxis and rental cars offer more flexibility. Roads are often unpaved in newer neighbourhoods, and a four-wheel-drive vehicle can be useful for dune tracks and longer desert excursions.

Where to Stay

Most hotels and guesthouses are concentrated in central Nouakchott, while Nouakchott-Nord remains largely residential. Staying in Tevragh-Zeina or near the city centre keeps restaurants and services close, and airport-area options suit early departures or short business trips.

Food & Drink

Mauritanian meals often feature thieboudienne, a dish of fish and rice, alongside grilled meat, dates and sweet mint tea known as ataya. Neighbourhood cafés and markets across Nouakchott-Nord serve local food, while the capital's restaurants and the Port de Pêche offer fresh Atlantic fish.
