About Trarza
Rosso is the capital of Mauritania's Trarza Region and the country's main overland gateway to Senegal. It sits on the right bank of the Senegal River, directly across from the Senegalese town of Rosso, and its busy river ferry links the Nouakchott–Dakar road corridor.
Historically, Rosso developed as a centre of the Emirate of Trarza and as a 19th-century trading post for gum arabic. Colonial-era influences survive alongside the riverfront, where fishing boats, market stalls and cross-border ferries shape daily life. The town also hosted the Xavier-Coppolani school, which trained many of Mauritania's early administrators.
Beyond the town, Trarza offers notable natural sites, including the wetlands of Diawling National Park, a haven for migratory birds, and Lake R'kiz. In Rosso itself, the market, central mosque and riverfront districts give visitors a clear sense of a Sahelian border town.
The local economy is built on cross-border trade, agriculture, livestock and fishing. A new bridge over the Senegal River is being developed to improve the corridor between Nouakchott and Dakar, strengthening Rosso's role as a trade and transit hub.
For travellers, Rosso is a practical stopover on overland routes through the Sahel and a useful base for exploring Trarza's cultural and natural attractions, while business visitors are drawn by the region's trade and infrastructure potential.

Trarza Travel Guide
Best Time to Visit
The cooler dry season from November to February is the most comfortable time to visit Rosso, with lower temperatures and clear skies. March to May can be very hot, while the July–September rainy season can make unpaved routes muddy.
How to Get Around
Rosso is compact enough to explore on foot, and shared taxis connect the town's districts and the riverfront. The Senegal River ferry crosses to Rosso, Senegal, while private vehicles or transfers are the most practical option for reaching Nouakchott and Trarza's outlying sites.
Where to Stay
Accommodation in Rosso is limited, with small hotels and guesthouses concentrated near the town centre and riverfront. Many travellers use Rosso as a border-crossing stopover or stay in Nouakchott and visit as a day trip.
Food & Drink
Mauritanian dishes such as rice with fish, grilled meat, couscous and sweet mint tea are widely available, with strong Senegalese influences along the river. Local markets and small riverside restaurants offer simple, affordable meals.
