About Tiris Zemmour

Zouérat is the largest town in northern Mauritania and the capital of Tiris Zemmour region, set deep in the Sahara and shaped above all by iron ore mining. The town owes its existence to the rich mineral deposits of the Kedia d'Idjil range and has grown into a compact, purpose-built desert mining centre.

Iron ore in the surrounding mountains was known for centuries, but large-scale exploitation began in 1952 and accelerated after 1958 when the mining company Miferma, later nationalised as SNIM, developed the deposits at Tazadit, Fderîck and Rouessa. Zouérat grew as a company town and remains the operational hub of Mauritania's iron ore industry.

The landscape around Zouérat is dominated by Kediet ej Jill, at about 915 metres the highest point in Mauritania, whose dark magnetite mass rises above the town. Beyond the open-pit mine viewpoints, the wider region contains remote desert scenery, the Ben Amera monolith and historic mining settlements such as Fderîck.

The town is connected to the Atlantic port of Nouadhibou by a roughly 700-kilometre railway used by some of the world's longest and heaviest ore trains, which have also become a legendary independent travel experience. Zouérat–Tazadit Airport links the city to Nouadhibou and Nouakchott, serving mining professionals and visitors.

Zouérat is relevant to travellers primarily as a gateway to Mauritania's industrial north and the empty expanses of the Sahara. Business visitors come for the mining economy, while adventurous tourists use the town as a base for desert excursions, the iron ore train and the striking rocky landscapes of Tiris Zemmour.
