About Penang
Penang is a Malaysian state on the northwest coast of Peninsular Malaysia, made up of Penang Island and the mainland area of Seberang Perai. Its capital, George Town, is the cultural heart of the state and was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2008 for its unusually well-preserved historic core of colonial and shophouse architecture.
George Town reflects centuries of Malay, Chinese, Indian and European influence. Landmarks include Fort Cornwallis, the Kapitan Keling Mosque, the clan jetties along Weld Quay, the ornate Khoo Kongsi clan house and the Blue Mansion built by Cheong Fatt Tze. Outside the city, Kek Lok Si Temple, Penang Hill and the beaches of Batu Ferringhi are among the island's best-known attractions.
Districts vary widely in character. The compact heritage zone around George Town is ideal for walking between temples, galleries, cafés and street art, while Gurney Drive offers seaside dining and shopping. Batu Ferringhi and Tanjung Bungah are the main beach and resort areas, and Bayan Lepas in the south holds Penang International Airport and a major electronics manufacturing zone.
Penang is sometimes described as the 'Silicon Valley of the East' because of its long-established electronics and semiconductor industry, centred on the Bayan Lepas Free Industrial Zone. This gives the state strong business and international relevance alongside its reputation as one of Southeast Asia's great food destinations, famous for dishes such as Penang assam laksa, char kway teow, nasi kandar and cendol.
For visitors, Penang works equally well as a cultural and culinary break or a business base. Its mix of heritage, beaches, tropical hill scenery, street food and modern industry makes it one of Malaysia's most distinctive destinations for both leisure and business travellers.

Penang Travel Guide
Best Time to Visit
The driest and most comfortable months are generally from December to February, when rainfall is lower and sea breezes keep the tropical heat pleasant. Avoid October and November if possible, as they bring the heaviest monsoon rains across the island.
How to Get Around
Rapid Penang buses cover most of the island, and a free CAT shuttle loops through central George Town. Taxis, ride-hailing apps and trishaws are useful for shorter trips, while car rental and the George Town–Butterworth ferry offer convenient ways to reach the mainland.
Where to Stay
George Town's heritage core suits visitors who want temples, street art and hawker food within walking distance. Gurney Drive offers upscale hotels near shopping and dining, while Batu Ferringhi and Tanjung Bungah are popular for beach resorts and a quieter coastal atmosphere.
Food & Drink
Penang is celebrated for hawker food such as char kway teow, Penang assam laksa, Hokkien mee, nasi kandar and cendol. Gurney Drive Hawker Centre, New Lane and Chulia Street are convenient starting points, alongside cafés and kopitiams across George Town.
