About Selangor
Selangor is Malaysia's most populous and most urbanised state, wrapping around the federal territories of Kuala Lumpur and Putrajaya on the west coast of Peninsular Malaysia. Centred on the Klang Valley, it mixes fast-growing cities, industrial and tech hubs, royal heritage towns and rural escapes, with Shah Alam as its state capital.
Much of Selangor's growth began with tin mining in the 19th century, and that legacy survives in Klang, the royal town, and in the Klang Valley's network of old and new settlements. The Sultan Salahuddin Abdul Aziz Shah Mosque, known as the Blue Mosque, dominates Shah Alam's skyline, while Batu Caves near Gombak is a major Hindu shrine with the tall Murugan statue and colourful temple steps.
Different districts offer very different experiences. Shah Alam combines the Blue Mosque, i-City's light displays and well-planned parks; Petaling Jaya and Subang Jaya are busy commercial and dining areas with Sunway Lagoon theme park; and Klang is famous for its heritage, Port Klang and bak kut teh. Further out, Kuala Selangor is known for firefly river cruises, Sekinchan for paddy fields and seafood, and Sepang for KLIA and the Sepang International Circuit.
Selangor is Malaysia's economic powerhouse, with Port Klang among the region's busiest ports, extensive industrial estates in Shah Alam and Klang, and the Cyberjaya tech corridor. Business travellers come for manufacturing, logistics and trade events such as the Selangor International Business Summit, while motorsport fans head to Sepang for MotoGP and other races.
For leisure and business visitors alike, Selangor is convenient: KLIA sits within the state, and Selangor surrounds Kuala Lumpur, putting its attractions, food streets, shopping malls and meeting venues within easy reach of the capital.

Selangor Travel Guide
Best Time to Visit
Selangor is warm and humid throughout the year, but December to February is often the most pleasant period with less rainfall. Morning and evening are comfortable for outdoor sights, while short afternoon showers can occur at any time of year.
How to Get Around
Selangor's districts are linked by KTM Komuter trains, LRT and MRT lines into areas such as Petaling Jaya and Subang Jaya, plus RapidKL buses, taxis and ride-hailing services. A rental car is useful for reaching Klang, Kuala Selangor, Sekinchan and other destinations beyond the rail network.
Where to Stay
Petaling Jaya and Subang Jaya suit travellers wanting shopping, dining and easy access to Sunway Lagoon, while Shah Alam is convenient for the Blue Mosque and i-City. Klang offers a more heritage-focused stay, and hotels around Sepang and KLIA are handy for early flights.
Food & Drink
Selangor's food scene is anchored by Klang bak kut teh, Kajang satay and fresh seafood in Kuala Selangor and Sekinchan. Malay, Chinese and Indian eateries, night markets and modern cafés make it easy to eat well across the state.
