About River Gee

River Gee County lies in southeastern Liberia along the border with Côte d'Ivoire. Its administrative centre is Fish Town, a small riverside settlement that serves as the county's main cultural and trading hub. The county is one of Liberia's least populous and most rural, defined by dense rainforest, river valleys and farming communities.

The county was created in 2000 from part of Grand Gedeh County and takes its name from the Gee River. Most residents belong to Grebo-speaking communities with long traditions of fishing, subsistence farming and small-scale trade. Fish Town grew up around the Kanweaken River, while Webbo, further inland, is known as an old missionary town.

The landscape is shaped by the Gee and Cavalla rivers; the Cavalla forms the border with Côte d'Ivoire. Parts of Grebo-Krahn National Park extend into the county, protecting rainforest, chimpanzees and other wildlife. Visitors can explore Fish Town's market and riverside paths, meet rural communities, or use the town as a base for forest and river trips.

The local economy centres on rice, cassava, oil palm and small-scale trade, with markets supplying much of everyday commerce. Infrastructure is limited and travel requires patience, but that remoteness is part of the county's appeal for travellers seeking a quieter and more authentic side of Liberia.

River Gee suits adventurous and business travellers heading to the southeast, whether for agriculture, conservation or cultural contact. It is reached by road from Zwedru or Harper and is often combined with visits to Grand Gedeh, Sinoe or Maryland.

River Gee Travel Guide

Best Time to Visit

The dry season from November to April is the most practical time to visit River Gee, when unpaved roads and forest tracks are easier to navigate. Heavy rains from May to October can make travel slower and some routes difficult.

How to Get Around

River Gee has little formal public transport, so most movement is by shared taxi, motorcycle taxi or hired vehicle along rough roads. Visitors usually arrive by road from Zwedru or Harper and use Fish Town as a base for nearby trips.

Where to Stay

Accommodation is limited, with guesthouses and small lodges concentrated in Fish Town and, to a lesser extent, Webbo. Travellers should expect basic facilities and arrange stays in advance, or base themselves in larger towns such as Zwedru or Harper.

Food & Drink

Local food is built around rice, cassava, fish and leafy greens, with palm-butter and pepper soups common in market chop shops. Fish Town's market and small cookshops are the best places to sample everyday Liberian dishes.
