About Montserrado
Monrovia is Liberia's capital and largest city, spread along the Atlantic coast at the mouth of the Mesurado River. Founded in 1822 by African American settlers under the American Colonization Society and named for US President James Monroe, the city combines Americo-Liberian heritage with everyday West African coastal life.
The city's history is visible in central landmarks such as Providence Island, the original landing point of the settlers, the National Museum of Liberia, Centennial Pavilion and Providence Baptist Church. From Ducor Hill, views stretch over the city toward the Atlantic, while the remains of the Ducor Palace Hotel recall Monrovia's mid-20th-century prominence before Liberia's civil wars.
Broad Street anchors the commercial centre, and the busy Waterside Market offers fabrics, food and daily trade near the Mesurado River. Residential and diplomatic areas such as Mamba Point and Sinkor hold embassies, hotels, restaurants and nightlife, while Paynesville and Congo Town continue to grow outward. Beaches such as Silver Beach and Bernard's Beach provide weekend escapes within the Greater Monrovia area.
The Freeport of Monrovia is one of West Africa's important ports and supports trade in rubber, iron ore and imported goods. Government offices, banks, NGOs and international organisations give the city a steady business and conference role, with the University of Liberia and Antoinette Tubman Stadium adding civic and sporting activity.
Monrovia appeals to both leisure and business travellers as Liberia's gateway city. Visitors can combine cultural sites, coastal beaches and lively markets with meetings, port business and NGO work, then reach Roberts International Airport about 56 kilometres to the southeast.

Montserrado Travel Guide
Best Time to Visit
The dry season from November to April is the most comfortable time to visit Monrovia, with less rain and easier access to beaches, markets and sightseeing. The rainy season from May to October brings heavy downpours that can cause flooding and muddy roads, though the city stays green and lively.
How to Get Around
Monrovia is served by shared taxis, private taxis, motorbike taxis and three-wheeled kehkehs, with the busiest routes passing through Broad Street, Sinkor and Waterside Market. Roads can be congested, so many visitors prefer a pre-booked car, driver or hotel transport for longer trips.
Where to Stay
Mamba Point is popular for embassies, waterfront hotels and a quieter atmosphere, while Sinkor offers a wide range of hotels, restaurants and nightlife. Central areas near Broad Street suit business travellers, and Paynesville provides more residential options and growing services.
Food & Drink
Liberian cuisine features jollof rice, cassava leaf, palm butter, pepper soup, fufu and grilled or fried fish. Try busy spots around Waterside Market, beachside food stalls and restaurants in Sinkor and Mamba Point, where cafés and bars add international options.
