About Lofa

Voinjama is the capital of Lofa County in Liberia's far north-west, a small highland trading town set close to the Guinea and Sierra Leone borders. Its mixed Loma, Mandingo and Kissi communities give the town a distinctly multi-ethnic, cross-border character centred on commerce, farming and local administration.

Voinjama was severely affected by Liberia's civil wars and has spent the years since rebuilding homes, schools, markets and public services. The surrounding Wologizi range contains Mount Wuteve, Liberia's highest peak, while the Lofa River and forested hills shape the region's landscape and farming life.

The town's central market and roadside stalls are the daily hub, trading rice, palm oil, coffee, cocoa and goods moving to and from neighbouring Guinea. Nearby towns such as Foya, Kolahun and Konia extend the county's trading and agricultural network, while Lofa-Mano National Park and the Wologizi mountains draw a small number of adventurous visitors.

Voinjama functions as a gateway for government, NGO and business travel in north-western Liberia. Voinjama Airport (Tenebu Field) provides limited air access, and road links run south toward Monrovia and toward the border areas; a four-wheel-drive vehicle is generally advisable for rural routes, particularly in the rainy season.

Lofa Travel Guide

Best Time to Visit

The dry season from November to April is the most practical time to visit Voinjama, with December to February offering the most settled weather and the best road conditions. Heavy rains from May to October can make unpaved roads muddy and slow travel across Lofa County.

How to Get Around

Voinjama's compact centre is easy to explore on foot, while shared taxis and motorbike taxis connect the town with nearby districts and villages. For rural routes and visits to border areas or the Wologizi highlands, a four-wheel-drive vehicle is recommended, especially during the rainy season.

Where to Stay

Accommodation is limited and mostly consists of small guesthouses and basic hotels near the town centre. Travellers should book ahead when possible, and Foya offers additional simple lodgings for those exploring western Lofa County.

Food & Drink

Local meals centre on rice served with palm butter, cassava leaf or groundnut soup, often accompanied by fish, chicken or beef. Market stalls, small cafés and roadside cookshops in Voinjama offer affordable Liberian dishes along with fresh fruit and local drinks.
