About Grand Kru

Grand Kru County is a sparsely populated, heavily forested county in southeastern Liberia, with its capital at Barclayville. It was created in 1984 from the former Sasstown and Kru Coast territories, and it remains one of the country's most remote and least developed regions.

The county is the homeland of the Kru and related Grebo-speaking peoples, whose history as seafarers and migrant workers along the West African coast shaped the area's culture. Barclayville, the small administrative centre, grew around road and river crossings, including the Na River bridge that links inland districts to the coast.

The landscape mixes rainforest, winding rivers, grassland and a long Atlantic coastline. Beaches such as Grand Cess, Picinicess and Twin Rock, along with inland sites like Sawleh Mountain and Lake Trengbe, offer quiet nature and community-based tourism experiences rather than large-scale attractions.

Daily life centres on fishing, cassava and rice farming, small trade and local markets. Infrastructure is limited, and travel between districts often depends on unpaved roads, motorbike taxis and four-wheel-drive vehicles, especially in the rainy season.

For travellers, Grand Kru offers a chance to see a traditional, rural side of Liberia far from the busier Monrovia area. It suits independent visitors, researchers and those interested in Kru culture, coastal landscapes and slow, off-the-beaten-path travel.
