About Mafeteng
Mafeteng is a small, historically layered town in western Lesotho and the administrative capital of Mafeteng District, lying about 76 kilometres south of Maseru near the South African border. Its name, linked to an early traveller nicknamed 'Lefeta,' means 'the place of the passers-by,' reflecting its long role as a stopping point and trading settlement.
Founded in 1880 as a frontier post in what was then Basutoland, Mafeteng saw significant fighting during the Gun War of 1880-81. That history remains visible around town: a cemetery near Bantu Stadium holds an obelisk to Cape forces who died in the area, while the working Diphiring Mill, established in 1912, still processes maize, wheat and other grains through an original pulley-driven system.
Today the town serves as a commercial and light-industrial centre for the surrounding lowlands, with a Gap/Old Navy garment factory, the Lesotho Pharmaceutical Company and lively local markets. It is also the main gateway to the Van Rooyen's Gate border crossing at Wepener, linking Lesotho with South Africa's Free State.
Mafeteng itself has a modest visitor scene centred on the Golden Hotel and Mafeteng Hotel, whose bars anchor the town's limited nightlife. Many travellers pass through on the way to Malealea Lodge, known for pony trekking and village experiences in the district's southern hills.
For both leisure and business visitors, Mafeteng offers an authentic, unhurried view of lowland Lesotho: Basotho culture, market life, industrial activity and easy access to border trade routes and rural highland scenery.
