About Ventspils
Ventspils is a port city on Latvia's Baltic coast, at the mouth of the Venta River in the northwestern Kurzeme region. It is known for its working Free Port, its Blue Flag beach and a family-friendly centre dotted with colourful cow sculptures, which have become an informal symbol of the city.
The city's history reaches back to 1290, when it developed as a Hanseatic trading settlement under the German name Windau. The 13th-century Livonian Order Castle, now a museum, stands beside the river, while the restored Old Town and the former warehouse quarter of Ostgals retain cobbled streets and historic buildings. The modern Concert Hall "Latvija", opened in 2019, and the long South Pier with its viewing tower reflect the city's mix of heritage and renewal.
Beyond the centre, Ventspils offers a wide Blue Flag beach backed by dunes and pine forest, the Seaside Open-Air Museum with its historic Mazbānītis narrow-gauge steam train, the interactive Science Centre VIZIUM, and the Adventure Park and Children's Town. A waterfront promenade along Ostas Street links harbour heritage with recreation, while more than 70 km of cycling paths connect the main attractions.
Ventspils is also a significant Baltic port and a centre for transit cargo, alongside growing technology and education activity through the Ventspils High Technology Park and Ventspils University of Applied Sciences. Seasonal events such as the City Festival, the Sea Festival and sports and music gatherings add to the local calendar, and the International Writers' and Translators' House supports a cultural exchange role.
For visitors, Ventspils works equally well as a relaxed seaside break and as a base for business or port-related travel. Its compact size, clean beach and family attractions suit leisure travellers, while the port, technology sector and road links to the Kurzeme coast make it practical for working visits.
