About Valmiera

Valmiera is the largest city in Latvia's Vidzeme region and a northern gateway to Gauja National Park. It stretches along both banks of the Gauja River about 100 km northeast of Riga, combining a compact, walkable centre with easy access to forest trails, river rapids and countryside.

The city's history reaches back to the 13th century, when the Livonian Order built a castle at the Gauja crossing. First documented as a town in 1323, Valmiera later joined the Hanseatic League. Its centrepiece, St Simon's Church, dates from 1283, while the castle ruins and Valmiera Museum tell the story of a town rebuilt many times after wars and fires.

Visitors can walk the Park of Senses along the Gauja's steep banks, cross to the Pārgauja side of the river and stroll the mill pond promenade or the old town around the church and castle. The Valmiera Drama Theatre, Jānis Daliņš Stadium and the Valmiermuiža brewery outside town add culture, sport and local flavour.

Valmiera is also an industrial and education centre, home to the Valmiera Glass Group's glass fibre production and Vidzeme University of Applied Sciences. That mix supports business travel, while seasonal events, boating on the Gauja and winter sports nearby attract leisure visitors.

For travellers, Valmiera works as a manageable base for exploring Vidzeme and Gauja National Park, and as a practical stop between Riga and southern Estonia. Its size makes sightseeing, meetings and day trips simple, whether arriving by train, bus or road.
