About Kalimantan Utara
North Kalimantan (Kalimantan Utara) is Indonesia's youngest province, established in 2012 and located on the northern edge of Borneo, where it borders Malaysia's Sabah and Sarawak. Its administrative capital is Tanjung Selor, while Tarakan is the largest city and the province's main commercial and transport hub. The region is defined by lowland and hill rainforest, long rivers and a coastline of islands, giving it a quieter, more frontier-like character than Indonesia's larger urban centres.
The province grew out of the former Bulungan Sultanate and remains home to Dayak, Tidung, Bulungan and other indigenous communities. Longhouses, river settlements, traditional festivals and local crafts reflect that living heritage, while Tarakan carries reminders of its role in the Second World War and its oil-port past. Tanjung Selor, set near the Kayan River delta, is a compact administrative town with government offices, parks and local markets.
The main places visitors explore are Tarakan and Tanjung Selor, with Nunukan and Malinau serving as gateways to the interior. Kayan Mentarang National Park, one of Borneo's largest protected areas, protects lowland and mountain forest around the Kayan and Mentarang headwaters, while the Krayan highlands in Nunukan offer village trails, rice paddies and Dayak cultural experiences. Coastal attractions such as Amal Beach and the offshore islands around Tarakan and Nunukan add a maritime side to the destination.
Economically, North Kalimantan is tied to oil and gas, coal, palm oil, fisheries and timber, with growing investment in the Tanah Kuning–Mangkupadi Green Industrial Zone and international port in Bulungan. Border trade with nearby Tawau in Malaysia and proposed hydroelectric projects are expanding the province's business profile, bringing government, engineering and logistics visitors alongside those working in energy and plantations.
For travellers, North Kalimantan offers river and forest landscapes, indigenous culture and a less commercialised side of Borneo, while Tarakan and Tanjung Selor provide practical bases with flights, hotels and services. The region suits ecotourism and adventure as well as business travel linked to resources, border trade and industrial development.
