About Sulawesi Utara

Manado is the capital of North Sulawesi and the main gateway to Indonesia's northeastern region. The city stretches along Manado Bay on the Minahasa Peninsula, with volcanic peaks rising inland and the protected reefs of Bunaken National Marine Park just offshore. Locals call it the "City of 1001 Churches", a reflection of the strong Christian heritage that distinguishes North Sulawesi from much of Indonesia.

Manado's history is visible in its old port, Dutch-era buildings and the Chinese quarter around Ban Hin Kiong Temple, founded in the early 19th century. The city was an important colonial trading post and saw heavy fighting during the Second World War before growing into a commercial and transport hub for eastern Indonesia.

The best-known attraction is Bunaken National Marine Park, a short boat ride from the city, where coral walls, sea turtles and clear water draw divers and snorkelers from around the world. On land, visitors head to the hillside Jesus Blessing Monument, the waterfront Boulevard, Point Zero in the city centre and shopping areas such as Mega Mall and Manado Town Square. Districts such as Wenang, Sario and Malalayang each offer a different mix of markets, cafés, hotels and coastal views.

Manado's food culture is one of the most distinctive in Indonesia, built on spicy Minahasan flavours. Local staples include tinutuan, a vegetable porridge, smoked skipjack tuna known as cakalang fufu, and fiery rica-rica and woku dishes, while klappertaart reflects the city's Dutch influence. Seafood restaurants cluster along the boulevard and Megamas area.

As a regional centre for trade, meetings and events, Manado also works well for business travel. Sam Ratulangi International Airport links the city to Jakarta, Singapore and destinations across the region, making it a practical base for diving trips, government and corporate visits, and onward travel around North Sulawesi.
