About Gujarat
Ahmedabad is Gujarat's largest city and a major commercial and cultural centre on the banks of the Sabarmati River. Founded in 1411 by Sultan Ahmed Shah, its walled Old City became India's first UNESCO World Heritage City in 2017 and remains known for centuries-old pols, bazaars, mosques and carved wooden architecture.
Historic landmarks include the Bhadra Fort, Jama Masjid, Sidi Saiyyed Mosque with its delicate stone lattice screens, and the calm Sabarmati Ashram, where Mahatma Gandhi lived and launched the Salt March. Along the Sabarmati Riverfront, promenades, gardens and the Atal Bridge connect the heritage core with newer parts of the city.
Ahmedabad is equally shaped by textiles, trade and innovation. The Calico Museum of Textiles and busy markets such as Manek Chowk and Law Garden reflect the city's long craft tradition, while institutions including IIM Ahmedabad, NID and the nearby GIFT City business district underline its role in education, finance and design.
Food and festivals add to the experience, from Gujarati thalis and street snacks to the Navratri garba season and the International Kite Festival. Neighbourhoods range from the narrow lanes of the old city to modern shopping and dining areas around CG Road and SG Highway.
For both leisure and business travellers, Ahmedabad offers a practical mix of heritage, industry, events and a well-connected airport, making it a natural gateway to Gujarat and destinations such as the Sun Temple at Modhera, the stepwell at Adalaj and the Rann of Kutch.
