About Yuen Long
Yuen Long is a historic market town and district in the northwest New Territories of Hong Kong, known for its traditional walled villages, wetland landscapes and authentic local food culture. Once a rural market centre serving farming communities, it has grown into a busy town while retaining a strong sense of its Tang Clan heritage.
The area's history is visible along the Ping Shan Heritage Trail, Hong Kong's first heritage trail, which links centuries-old ancestral halls, study halls and the Tsui Sing Lau Pagoda. Nearby Kam Tin is famous for Kat Hing Wai and other walled villages, while Tin Shui Wai, a large planned community, and Yuen Long New Town show the district's more modern side.
Yuen Long offers a contrast between compact urban streets and open countryside. The Hong Kong Wetland Park, Mai Po Nature Reserve and Nam Sang Wai are popular for birdwatching and outdoor walks, and Tai Lam Country Park extends across the hills to the south.
The town centre around Yuen Long station and the Yoho Mall area is lively with shops, markets and restaurants, while Castle Peak Road runs with local eateries serving noodles, roasted meats and street snacks. Yuen Long is also known for its dessert shops, including the oversized fruit-topped grass jelly served at local favourites.
For visitors, Yuen Long works well as a day trip from central Hong Kong as well as a base for exploring the New Territories. It is connected by the MTR Tuen Ma Line and Light Rail, and remains relevant for leisure travellers seeking heritage and nature, as well as for visitors travelling to or from the Shenzhen Bay area.
