About Wan Chai
Wan Chai sits on the northern shore of Hong Kong Island, where glossy skyscrapers, exhibition halls and heritage buildings stand side by side. The district stretches from the harbourfront Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre through Causeway Bay, Happy Valley and Tai Hang, creating one of the city's most varied urban mixes. Wan Chai began as a small fishing village known as Ha Wan, then grew through successive land reclamation projects from the 1920s onward. The opening of the Cross-Harbour Tunnel in 1972 linked the district to Kowloon and turned it into a major transport hub, while landmarks such as the Blue House cluster, Old Wan Chai Market and Pak Tai Temple preserve its older character. The harbourfront is anchored by the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre and Golden Bauhinia Square, while Central Plaza and Times Square mark the commercial core. Smaller lanes around Queen's Road East, Stone Nullah Lane and the Starstreet Precinct hold antique shops, small cafés, markets and restored tenement buildings. Wan Chai is a key business and events district, hosting trade fairs, conferences and corporate activity throughout the year. After hours, Lockhart Road's bars, the dining streets around Lee Tung Avenue and local cha chaan teng offer a lively food and nightlife scene that mixes local Cantonese culture with international influences. For both leisure and business travellers, Wan Chai offers a compact base with fast MTR, tram, bus and ferry connections across Hong Kong Island, Kowloon and the airport.
