About Sul

Southern Guinea-Bissau, known as the Sul Province, is the country's most water-rich and biodiverse corner. It groups the regions of Quinara, Tombali and Bolama, including the Bijagós Archipelago, and stretches from the forested interior around Cantanhez National Park to the tidal channels of the Rio Grande de Buba. The town of Buba, on the river's edge, is the largest urban centre in the south.

History is visible throughout the province. Bolama served as the capital of Portuguese Guinea until 1941, and its quiet streets still hold faded colonial buildings, old administrative houses and a decaying pier. Buba was an important riverside trading post and has long been discussed as the site of a deep-water port that could connect the south to Bissau and beyond. The Bijagós Islands, meanwhile, preserve matrilineal social structures and sacred sites that remain central to island life.

The province's strongest draw is nature. The Bijagós Archipelago is a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve with mangroves, tidal flats, sea turtles, migratory birds and saltwater hippos. On the mainland, Cantanhez National Park protects one of West Africa's remaining western chimpanzee populations within a mosaic of forest, cashew orchards and farming villages. The Rio Grande de Buba estuary is a working fishing ground and a rewarding place for birdwatching and river trips.

Most journeys into the south begin in Bissau, where Osvaldo Vieira International Airport receives international flights. From there, travellers reach Buba and Catió by road or continue by boat to Bolama and the Bijagós islands. Infrastructure is limited: roads are partly unpaved, ferries and pirogues run on flexible schedules, and accommodation ranges from simple town guesthouses to small island lodges.

For visitors, southern Guinea-Bissau offers slow, nature- and culture-focused travel rather than polished tourism. Business interest is growing around agriculture, cashew, fisheries and the long-discussed Buba port and railway corridor, while researchers and conservation groups work across the protected areas. The province rewards travellers who plan ahead and accept a flexible pace.

Sul Travel Guide

Best Time to Visit

The dry season from November to May is the most practical time to explore southern Guinea-Bissau. December to February offers the best conditions for boat travel to the Bijagós Islands and for unpaved roads, while the June-to-October rains can make many routes difficult.

How to Get Around

Travel typically starts in Bissau and continues by shared taxi, minibus or 4x4 south toward Buba and Catió. Ferries and wooden pirogues connect Bolama and the Bijagós Islands, with schedules set by tides, so travellers should confirm departures locally and allow extra time.

Where to Stay

Buba and Catió offer simple guesthouses and small hotels, while Bolama and Bubaque have modest lodges and island accommodation. A few eco-lodges serve the Bijagós islands, so advance booking and flexibility are helpful.

Food & Drink

Meals centre on rice, fresh fish, mangrove oysters, cashew nuts and fruit, often served in guesthouses and small local restaurants. Markets in Buba, Catió and Bolama supply seasonal produce, while palm wine and cashew juice are common local drinks.
