About Samegrelo-Zemo Svaneti

Zugdidi is the administrative centre of Samegrelo-Zemo Svaneti in western Georgia, set on the humid Colchis lowland near the Enguri River. It functions as a regional hub and the main gateway to the mountain villages of Svaneti, including Mestia and Ushguli.

The city is best known for the Dadiani Palace, the 19th-century residence of the princes of Samegrelo. The palace complex now houses a museum with historical artefacts, while the adjoining Zugdidi Botanical Garden preserves subtropical trees and plants on about 26 hectares. The Shalva Dadiani State Drama Theater is also among the oldest working theatres in Georgia.

As the historical capital of Mingrelia, Zugdidi has a distinct Megrelian identity reflected in its food, markets and everyday life. The central boulevard, bazaar and nearby Enguri Bridge give visitors a practical introduction to western Georgia, and the city is a convenient stopover for trips to Martvili Canyon, Anaklia or Svaneti.

Zugdidi is a regional trade, administration and transport centre rather than a large business destination. Its railway station links the city with Tbilisi, while marshrutkas and roads connect it to Kutaisi, Batumi and the mountains.

For leisure travellers, Zugdidi offers a low-key cultural and culinary base close to some of Georgia's most dramatic landscapes. For business travellers, it provides essential regional services and onward connections across western Georgia.

Best Time to Visit

Late spring and early autumn are the most comfortable times to visit Zugdidi, with mild temperatures and less humidity than midsummer. Summer is warm and humid but works well as a base for trips to the Svaneti mountains, while winter is quieter and greener with occasional rain.

How to Get Around

Central Zugdidi is compact and easy to explore on foot. Local minibuses, city buses and taxis cover the wider area, and marshrutkas run regularly to Kutaisi, Batumi, Mestia and other regional destinations.

Where to Stay

Most visitors stay in the centre near the Dadiani Palace and main boulevard, where small hotels and guesthouses are concentrated. Guesthouses and homestays in surrounding villages also offer an authentic base for onward travel to Svaneti.

Food & Drink

Zugdidi is a good place to try Megrelian cuisine, including elarji with sulguni cheese, gebzhalia and rich meat stews. Local cafés, bakeries and the central market serve everyday regional dishes, while wine and chacha are common at family tables.
