About Northern
Labasa is the administrative and commercial centre of Fiji's Northern Division, located on the northwest coast of Vanua Levu, the country's second-largest island. Set on the Labasa River amid sugarcane fields, it is the largest town in the north and a working gateway to Vanua Levu's coast, islands and reefs.
The town grew around the sugar industry, and the Labasa Sugar Mill remains central to local life and economy. Its Indo-Fijian heritage is strong, with colourful Hindu temples such as the Naag Mandir snake temple and its cobra-shaped rock sitting alongside Fijian villages and older colonial-era buildings.
The compact centre runs along the river and around the main market, where fresh produce, spices and everyday goods are traded. Nearby Subrail Park hosts rugby and football as well as the annual Festival of the Friendly North, while the Wasavulu archaeological site and the port at Malau reflect different sides of the region's past and present.
For travellers, Labasa is a practical base for exploring Vanua Levu and the Northern Division, including Savusavu's harbour, Taveuni and the dive sites of the Somosomo Strait. Domestic flights and ferries connect it with Viti Levu, and the town offers a direct look at everyday Fiji away from the main resort areas.
Business travel centres on agriculture, sugar, transport and regional services, with government offices and markets drawing people from across the north. Leisure visitors come for a quieter, more local Fiji experience and for onward journeys to the region's reefs, rainforest and offshore islands.
