About Addis Ababa
Addis Ababa is Ethiopia's capital and largest city, a highland metropolis that serves as the country's political, economic and diplomatic centre. Located at roughly 2,400 metres above sea level, it is one of the world's highest capitals and is widely regarded as a major hub for African diplomacy, hosting the headquarters of the African Union and the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa.
The city was founded in 1886 by Emperor Menelik II, and its name means 'New Flower' in Amharic. Its history is visible in landmarks such as the Holy Trinity Cathedral, St. George's Cathedral, the National Museum and the former imperial palace complex now used by Addis Ababa University. The National Museum is best known for displaying the fossil remains known as Lucy, a key find in the study of human origins.
Districts range from the busy Bole area, known for the airport, hotels, restaurants and international life, to the historic Piazza and Arada neighbourhoods with Italian-era architecture, and Kazanchis and Kirkos with government buildings, offices and business hotels. Merkato, one of Africa's largest open-air markets, offers a dense, colourful trading experience across a large part of the city's western side.
Addis Ababa blends traditional culture with modern commerce. Coffee ceremonies, injera-based cuisine, live music and contemporary cafés sit alongside conference venues, corporate headquarters and the expanding skyline around Bole Road and Sarbet. As the main hub of Ethiopian Airlines, the city is also a gateway for travel across Africa and beyond.
For leisure travellers, the city offers museums, mountain viewpoints at Entoto, bustling markets and authentic food culture, while business visitors benefit from its role as a centre for summits, international organisations and regional trade. Both audiences find a distinctive destination shaped by altitude, history and rapid change.

Addis Ababa Travel Guide
Best Time to Visit
The dry season from October to May is generally the most comfortable time for sightseeing, with clearer skies and less rain. Major festivals such as Meskel in September and Timkat in January add cultural interest, while the heavy rains usually arrive between June and September.
How to Get Around
Addis Ababa has a two-line light rail system, city buses and shared blue-and-white minibus taxis for local journeys. Ride-hailing apps, private taxis and chauffeur services are useful for direct trips, especially after dark or when travelling to business districts and the airport.
Where to Stay
Bole is convenient for the airport, international restaurants and shopping, while Kazanchis and Kirkos suit business travellers with hotels close to offices and conference venues. Piazza and Arada offer a more historic, budget-friendly atmosphere, and areas such as CMC and Gerji have longer-stay and expat-oriented options.
Food & Drink
Local eating centres on injera served with stews such as doro wat, shiro and tibs, alongside dishes like kitfo and fresh fruit juices.
