About Shiselweni
Nhlangano is the administrative centre and main town of Shiselweni, Eswatini's southernmost region. It is the country's fourth largest town and serves as a trading and service hub for the surrounding rural communities, set beside the Ngwavuma River in a landscape of rolling hills and farmland.
Founded in 1921 as the farm supply centre of Goedgegun, the town was renamed Nhlangano, meaning "meeting place", after King George VI met King Sobhuza II there in 1947 to thank the Swazi kingdom for its support in the Second World War. That royal meeting remains a defining part of the town's identity.
Shiselweni is best known for its open countryside rather than dense urban attractions. Around Nhlangano, travellers can explore the Great Usutu River and Usutu Forest, viewpoints across the Grand Valley, and the Mahamba border area near South Africa. Mkhaya Game Reserve, known for rhino conservation, is within driving distance.
The town itself has a compact centre with shops, a market, a health centre, an SOS Children's Village and a small casino hotel. Nearby settlements such as Hlatikulu and Hluthi add to the region's rural character, while community tourism offers cultural ceremonies and local crafts.
For visitors, Nhlangano works as a practical gateway to southern Eswatini and a stopover on routes to and from South Africa. Business travellers come for agriculture, forestry and regional trade, while leisure visitors use the town as a base for scenery, wildlife and cultural experiences away from the busier centre of the country.
