About North Sinai

El Arish is the capital and largest city of Egypt's North Sinai Governorate, set on the Mediterranean coast about 50 kilometres from the Rafah crossing with the Gaza Strip. Nicknamed the City of Palm Trees, it is known for palm-lined beaches, Bedouin heritage and a long history as a coastal waypoint between Egypt and the Levant.

The city's past reaches back to the ancient settlement of Rinokoloura, and its strategic position has drawn many powers across the centuries. The Ottoman-era Arish Castle, rebuilt in 1560, is the most prominent surviving monument, while the Arish Museum and Sinai Heritage Museum document the region's archaeology and Bedouin traditions. Arish was under Israeli occupation from 1967 and returned to Egypt in 1979 under the Egypt-Israel peace treaty.

Around the centre, the corniche runs along the Mediterranean, with palm groves, beaches and local cafés. The Thursday Market is a busy traditional souq for produce, crafts and Bedouin goods, and outlying beaches such as Al-Ayubi draw local visitors. Nearby Lake Bardawil is an important wetland and salt-producing area.

Arish functions as the administrative and economic hub of North Sinai. It has a deep-water seaport handling cargo such as cement, sand, salt and marble, and Arish University supports education and research. El Arish International Airport serves the city and surrounding region, while the Northern Coastal Highway runs from the Suez Canal area through Arish toward Rafah.

For travellers, Arish offers a different side of Egypt: desert-meets-sea scenery, Bedouin culture and a quieter Mediterranean atmosphere. Because North Sinai has long been subject to security restrictions, visitors should check current official travel advice and arrange travel through reliable local channels before planning a trip.

How to Get Around

Arish is compact enough to explore parts of the centre on foot, and shared microbuses, taxis and rental cars cover longer distances. The Northern Coastal Highway connects the city with other North Sinai towns and the Suez Canal area.

Where to Stay

Accommodation is concentrated near the corniche and central areas, with a limited selection of hotels and guesthouses. Visitors should confirm current safety guidance and book through trusted local contacts or established providers.

Food & Drink

Local food combines Egyptian staples with Bedouin influences, including grilled fish and seafood from the Mediterranean, rice dishes and date-based sweets. The Thursday Market and neighbourhood cafés are good places to sample local produce and everyday dishes.
