About Tadjourah

Tadjoura, also spelled Tadjourah, is a small whitewashed port on the Gulf of Tadjoura in northern Djibouti. Known locally as La Ville Blanche for its white coral-stone buildings, it is one of the oldest towns in the country and a quiet contrast to the modern capital across the gulf.

Tadjourah Travel Guide

Best Time to Visit

November to February is the most comfortable period, with cooler weather and whale sharks gathering in the Gulf of Tadjoura. Avoid visiting during the hottest months from May to September when temperatures can be intense.

How to Get Around

The old town is small and best explored on foot. The usual arrival is by ferry from Djibouti City across the Gulf of Tadjoura, while taxis or 4WD vehicles are used for Sables Blancs beach and Day Forest National Park; the overland route from the capital is about 200 km.

Where to Stay

Accommodation is limited to a few small lodgings such as Hôtel Le Golfe near the port, Auberge Sables Blancs on the beach road and Campement Touristique de Tadjoura. Book ahead, as the town has few rooms and services can be basic.

Food & Drink

Dining is simple and local, typically grilled fish, rice, vegetables and set meals served at guesthouses. The Friday market offers spices, livestock and produce, and visitors should carry cash in Djiboutian francs because options outside hotels are limited.
