About Kasaï Central
Kananga is the capital of Kasaï-Central province in the south-central Democratic Republic of the Congo. Situated near the Lulua River, it is one of the country's largest cities and the main commercial, administrative and transport centre of the Kasai region.
Originally founded as Luluabourg in 1884, the city grew around the colonial-era railway and later became a provincial capital. It is remembered as the place where the first Congolese-written constitution was drafted in 1964, and it was renamed Kananga in 1966 during the post-independence renaming of Congolese cities.
Kananga reflects the culture of the Luba people of Kasai, with Tshiluba widely spoken alongside French. Landmarks include Saint-Clément Cathedral, the National Museum of Kananga with its collections on Luba heritage, Place de l'Indépendance and the lively Grand Marché, while the Lulua riverfront and the historic Mikalayi mission site add further interest.
The city functions as an administrative and trading hub for a region known for diamonds, maize, groundnuts, palm oil and cotton. Its railway links, regional roads and Kananga Airport connect it with other parts of the DRC, supporting business, humanitarian and government travel.
For travellers, Kananga offers a direct look at daily life and Luba culture in central Congo, as well as practical connections for work across the wider Kasai region, making it relevant for both cultural visitors and business travellers.
