About Cuvette
Owando is the capital of Cuvette Department in the northern interior of the Republic of the Congo, set along the Kouyou River. Once a colonial post known as Fort-Rousset, the town has grown into a quiet regional centre where river trade, timber and agriculture shape daily life.
Founded in 1903 as Rousset and renamed Fort-Rousset a year later, the town took the name Owando in 1977. Its colonial past remains visible alongside newer public buildings, and a Roman Catholic diocese was established here in 1955, marked by the Cathédrale Saint Firmin.
Notable local landmarks include the École des trois présidents, associated with Congolese leaders who studied there, and the former residence of President Marien Ngouabi. Along the Kouyou River, visitors also encounter the 'arbre mystique' (Kindo Odzoko), a natural site tied to local tradition.
The town is predominantly home to Kouyou people and serves Cuvette's farming, fishing and forestry communities. The riverfront market, nearby villages and surrounding forest provide a contrast to the larger cities of Brazzaville and Pointe-Noire.
For travellers, Owando is a gateway to the northern Congo Basin. It is reachable by air through Owando Airport (FTX) and is relevant to researchers, NGO staff and business visitors working in the region, while the riverside setting offers a slower, authentic Congolese experience.
