About Sangha
Ouésso is the capital of Sangha Department in the far north of the Republic of the Congo, set on the Sangha River at its confluence with the Ngoko River and surrounded by lowland rainforest. As the main administrative and commercial centre of northern Congo, it feels like a working river town rather than a conventional tourist city.
The town was founded as a French colonial post in 1891 and later developed around the river port, which still moves passengers, cargo and timber along the Sangha. Traces of that past survive in colonial-era buildings and the old market near the port, while timber yards, workshops and small trading businesses shape much of daily life.
Ouésso is the natural gateway to the forest landscapes of the Sangha region, including Nouabalé-Ndoki National Park, part of the cross-border Sangha Trinational World Heritage area. Visitors use the town as a staging point for river journeys, wildlife-focused trips and visits to remote forest communities.
The local economy runs on timber, river trade and cross-border commerce with Cameroon and Gabon, reinforced by the RN2 road south and Ouésso Airport's flights to Brazzaville. For business and leisure travellers alike, Ouésso offers a practical base for northern Congo's logistics, conservation projects and forest travel.

Sangha Travel Guide
Best Time to Visit
The drier months, roughly December to February and again June to August, are the most practical for reaching Ouésso and travelling forest roads and river routes. Heavy rains in other months can make rural tracks and access difficult.
How to Get Around
Ouésso itself is compact and easy to cover on foot or by motorbike taxi, with shared taxis for longer trips within town. For regional travel, 4x4 vehicles, river boats and pirogues are common, while the RN2 road links the town toward the south.
Where to Stay
Accommodation is limited but concentrated around the centre, river port and market area, mostly in simple guesthouses and small hotels. Many travellers use Ouésso as an overnight base before continuing to Nouabalé-Ndoki National Park or other forest destinations.
Food & Drink
Local eating centres on river fish, cassava and plantain dishes, often sold around the market and port. Grilled or smoked fish, stews, fresh fruit and simple cafés and bars provide everyday meals for visitors.
