About Coquimbo

Coquimbo is a coastal port city in northern Chile and part of the La Serena–Coquimbo conurbation in the Coquimbo Region. Its working harbour, fishing coves, beaches and relaxed Pacific atmosphere give the city a distinctive maritime character, while nearby La Serena adds a more historic and administrative side to the shared urban area.

Landmarks include the Cruz del Tercer Milenio, a towering concrete cross on Cerro El Vigía with panoramic views over the bay, and the Barrio Inglés, a compact quarter of late-19th-century wooden and Victorian-style houses built during the mining era. The restored Fuerte Lambert and the iron-built Guayacán church near La Herradura Bay also reflect the city's port and industrial heritage.

Neighbourhoods and attractions are spread between the port and the coast: the lively Barrio Inglés concentrates restaurants and nightlife, while La Herradura, Peñuelas and Totoralillo offer beaches for swimming and water sports. The Guayacán fishing cove, craft markets and coastal viewpoints add to the local experience.

Coquimbo is an important regional port and commercial centre, with fishing, shipping and tourism supporting the local economy. The Fiesta de la Pampilla in September is one of Chile's largest popular celebrations, drawing thousands of visitors, while the nearby Elqui Valley is a major destination for pisco production and stargazing.

Leisure travellers come for beaches, seafood, nightlife and access to the Elqui Valley, while business travellers value the port, events and transport links to La Serena. Together, La Serena and Coquimbo form one of northern Chile's most visited coastal destinations.
