About Biobío
Concepción is the capital of Chile's Biobío Region and one of the country's most important cities, sitting beside the Biobío River near the Pacific coast. It is known as a university city and the commercial, cultural and financial hub of central-southern Chile, with a lively centre, green hills and easy access to port and coastal towns.
Founded in 1550 by Pedro de Valdivia, Concepción was a colonial military centre during the Arauco War and moved to its present site after the 1751 earthquake and tsunami. Its history is visible around Plaza de la Independencia, where independence from Spain was solemnly declared in 1818, and in the city's cathedrals, historic bridges and 20th-century architecture.
The Universidad de Concepción campus is a highlight, with the Casa del Arte and Jorge González Camarena's mural Presencia de América Latina, while Parque Ecuador, Cerro Caracol, the Teatro Biobío and the Museum of Natural History offer green space and culture. Around the centre, areas such as the Barrio Universitario and Plaza Perú mix cafés, nightlife and student energy, and nearby Talcahuano, Lota, Tomé and Dichato add port, mining and beach experiences.
Concepción is also a business and logistics centre for the region's forestry, fishing, port and services industries, supported by several universities and research institutions. Its theatres, convention venues and busy event calendar make it a practical base for meetings, while craft beer bars, seafood restaurants and a strong live-music scene give the city a distinct local character.
For travellers, Concepción combines urban services and culture with quick access to the Biobío coast and countryside. Leisure visitors come for the university atmosphere, food and nearby coastal towns, while business travellers value its role as the economic and administrative centre of the Biobío Region.
