About Northwest
Bamenda is the capital of Cameroon's Northwest Region and the main urban centre of the country's English-speaking highlands. Set at roughly 1,600 metres above sea level, the city spreads across green, hilly terrain and serves as the administrative, commercial and transport hub of the region.
The city's history is rooted in the Grassfields fondoms, and places such as the Mankon Fon's Palace and its museum preserve that royal heritage. Nearby Bafut, with its palace and traditional architecture, is one of the region's most significant cultural sites, while the Bali Fon's Palace also reflects older building traditions.
Central Bamenda is organised around Commercial Avenue, with the busy Bamenda Main Market at its heart. Neighbourhoods such as Old Town, Up Station and Nkwen each have their own character, from historic lanes and hillside viewpoints to quieter residential areas and guesthouses.
The surrounding landscape is part of the city's appeal: Sabga Hill offers wide views over the Ndop plain, and Bamenda is the usual starting point for the Ring Road, a scenic loop through Wum, Nkambe and Kumbo. The University of Bamenda and the city's trade in coffee and farm produce add an educational and economic dimension.
For travellers, Bamenda combines practical regional connections with a distinctive highland culture. It suits independent visitors interested in Grassfields history, markets and scenery, while business travellers use it as a base for the Northwest Region.

Northwest Travel Guide
Best Time to Visit
The dry season from November to February is the most comfortable time to visit, with clearer roads and better conditions for exploring the highlands and the Ring Road. Rain is common from March to October, and the cooler mountain air means evenings can be fresh year-round.
How to Get Around
Within Bamenda, shared taxis and motorcycle taxis are widely used for short trips across the city and its hills. For longer journeys, buses and shared taxis run to Douala and Yaoundé, while a hired car gives more flexibility for the Ring Road.
Where to Stay
Central areas around Commercial Avenue and Up Station are convenient for markets, banks and restaurants, with a mix of hotels and guesthouses. Nkwen and other quieter neighbourhoods offer calmer, more residential stays on the outskirts of the centre.
Food & Drink
Local cooking features dishes such as achu, ndolé, eru, koki and grilled fish or chicken with plantains. Bamenda's markets, roadside food stalls and small restaurants offer an easy introduction to Cameroonian and highland cuisine.
