About Southwest

Buea is the capital of Cameroon's Southwest Region and sits at the foot of Mount Cameroon (Mount Fako) at roughly 900 metres above sea level. Known for its cool highland climate, historic role and large student population, the city is often called the Town of Legendary Hospitality.

From 1901 to 1919 Buea served as the capital of German Kamerun, and it later became the capital of British Southern Cameroons. Colonial-era landmarks such as the Bismarck Fountain and the Reunification Monument remain visible reminders of this layered history and of Cameroon's 1961 reunification.

The dominant natural landmark is Mount Cameroon, the highest peak in West and Central Africa, whose hiking routes begin near the city. Other points of interest include the Tole Tea Estate, the University of Buea campus and lively markets, while the Atlantic resort town of Limbe with its botanic garden and wildlife centre lies a short drive away.

Neighbourhoods such as Molyko, Buea Town and Great Soppo give the city its character. Molyko is the commercial and student hub with cafés, restaurants and guesthouses, Buea Town holds the older administrative core, and Great Soppo is a quieter residential area.

Buea is a regional centre for education, government and agriculture, with tea and cocoa production around the city and a growing base of small technology and service businesses. For travellers, it works as a base for Mount Cameroon treks and excursions to Limbe, while its university, institutions and events also bring business and academic visitors.
