About Battambang

Battambang is northwestern Cambodia's largest city and the capital of Battambang Province, set along the banks of the Sangkae River. Known as Cambodia's rice bowl, it combines a relaxed provincial pace with well-preserved French colonial architecture, lively markets and one of the country's most distinctive arts scenes.

The city's heritage is visible in its riverside streets of shuttered shophouses, the central Psar Nath market and landmarks such as the Governor's Residence. Around town, the 11th-century Wat Ek Phnom, the hilltop Prasat Banan temple and the Phnom Sampeau caves connect Battambang's present to centuries of Khmer, Thai and French influence.

Battambang is best known for the bamboo train, a simple wooden platform that rides the old railway through countryside and villages, and for Phare Ponleu Selpak, the celebrated circus and arts school whose performers have toured internationally. These experiences, along with riverside cafés and galleries, give the city a creative, unhurried identity.

Beyond the centre, rice paddies, temples, villages and small family workshops make Battambang a natural base for countryside exploration. The city is also an important commercial hub for western Cambodia's agriculture and a growing stop on travel routes between Phnom Penh, Siem Reap and the Thai border.

For leisure and business travellers alike, Battambang offers a compact, walkable centre with cafés, restaurants and guesthouses, plus direct road links to Siem Reap and Phnom Penh. Its mix of heritage, arts, food and everyday Cambodian life makes it one of the country's most rewarding secondary destinations.

Battambang Travel Guide

Best Time to Visit

The cool, dry season from November to February is the most comfortable time to visit Battambang, with lower humidity and pleasant temperatures for temple and countryside trips. The rainy season from May to October brings green rice fields and fewer crowds, though some rural roads can be muddy.

How to Get Around

Battambang's compact centre is easy to explore on foot or by bicycle, and tuk-tuks and motorbike taxis are widely available for trips to temples and villages. Renting a motorbike or hiring a car with a driver offers more flexibility for visiting the bamboo train, Phnom Sampeau and other rural sights.

Where to Stay

Most visitors stay in the riverside colonial quarter around Streets 1, 2 and 3, close to Psar Nath market, cafés and restaurants. Boutique hotels in restored colonial buildings, guesthouses and riverside lodges provide options across a compact, walkable area.

Food & Drink

Battambang's food scene ranges from Khmer staples such as amok, lok lak and rice noodle soup to strong coffee culture and street food around the market and riverfront. Rice from the surrounding countryside features heavily, and evening riverside restaurants, cafés and cocktail bars add to the town's relaxed appeal.
