About Brčko
Brčko is a compact port city in northeastern Bosnia and Herzegovina, set on the right bank of the Sava River directly across from Croatia. As the seat of the self-governing Brčko District, it has a distinctive administrative status within the country and a long history as a trading and transport crossroads between Sarajevo, Belgrade and Zagreb.
The city centre blends Ottoman and Austro-Hungarian heritage. The ornamental Gradska vijećnica, or City Hall, and the surrounding pedestrian zone anchor daily life, while the Savska Atik džamija from the early 17th century stands near the mouth of the Brka River. Orthodox and Catholic churches add to the skyline and reflect the city's multi-ethnic character.
The riverside shapes much of local culture. The Sava promenade and the green Ficibajer area in the Kolobara neighbourhood offer walking, cycling, cafés and river views, and two small pedestrian bridges over the Brka connect the centre with Kolobara.
Economically, Brčko works as a regional river port and logistics hub, supported by agriculture and small-scale industry, and its position close to the Croatian and Serbian borders keeps it relevant for trade and business travel. Cultural events, riverfront cafés and a modest but varied dining scene complete the picture.
For travellers, Brčko offers a quieter, authentic northern Bosnian stopover: easy riverside walks, Ottoman-era landmarks and a genuinely mixed local atmosphere, with practical connections to nearby cities and regional airports.
