Vitebsk

Vitebsk is one of Belarus's oldest and most culturally significant cities, set in the northeast where the small Vitba River meets the Western Dvina. Often called the country's northern cultural capital, it is best known as the birthplace of Marc Chagall and as the summer home of the Slavianski Bazaar international arts festival.

The city's history stretches back to the 10th century, and its centre still mixes historic churches, the elegant Vitebsk Town Hall and a riverside landscape shaped by centuries of trade. In the early 20th century, Vitebsk became a hub of the avant-garde when Chagall founded an art school here and Kazimir Malevich and other modernist figures taught in the city.

Beyond tourism, Vitebsk is a regional industrial and administrative centre with a mix of manufacturing, education and services. The annual Slavianski Bazaar festival brings international performers and large crowds each July, giving the city a lively seasonal calendar alongside its year-round theatres, galleries and markets.
