About Minsk

Minsk is the capital and largest city of Belarus, built on the banks of the Svislach and Nyamiha rivers. Known for its exceptionally wide avenues, monumental Soviet-era architecture and abundant green spaces, the city combines an orderly, spacious urban plan with a lively café, cultural and nightlife scene.

The city's history stretches back to its first mention in 1067. Over the centuries Minsk passed through the Grand Duchy of Lithuania, the Polish–Lithuanian Commonwealth and the Russian Empire before becoming the capital of Soviet Belarus. Much of the old centre was destroyed during the Second World War and rebuilt in the grand Stalinist style, which is why wide boulevards and imposing buildings define so much of today's cityscape.

Landmarks such as Independence Square, Victory Square and the long Independence Avenue anchor the centre, while the Upper Town and the restored Trinity Hill (Troitskoye Predmestye) preserve a more intimate, historic atmosphere with cafés, galleries and the Holy Spirit Cathedral. The futuristic, diamond-shaped National Library of Belarus and the moving Island of Tears memorial are among the city's most recognisable sights, alongside museums such as the Belarusian State Museum of the Great Patriotic War and the National Art Museum.

Beyond the centre, Minsk's districts range from green residential mikroraions to the activity around the Svislach riverfront, Gorky Park and Victory Park. The city is also a regional hub for technology and business, home to the High-Tech Park, major industrial enterprises and the headquarters of the Commonwealth of Independent States, while Minsk Arena and international exhibitions draw business and event travellers.

For visitors, Minsk offers a distinctive blend of Soviet monumentality, Orthodox and Catholic heritage, a developing modern food scene and efficient, affordable public transport. Its clean streets, parkland and compact centre make it easy to explore, whether the trip is for leisure, culture, meetings or events.
