About Mogilev
Mogilev is Belarus's third-largest city and the administrative centre of Mogilev Region, lying on the Dnieper River in the east of the country. It combines a centuries-old trading past with a strong industrial present and a compact, walkable historic core.
The city was first mentioned in 1267 and later developed under the Grand Duchy of Lithuania, the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth and the Russian Empire, when it became the centre of Mogilev Governorate. Its reconstructed 17th-century Town Hall, the 18th-century St. Nicholas Convent and monuments to the heavy fighting of 1941 at Buinichskoe Field show the layers of its history.
The pedestrian Leninskaya Street runs through the centre, linking the Town Hall, the Square of Stars with its distinctive Star Gazer sculpture, and the high banks of the Dnieper. The river embankment, Square of Glory, parks, theatres and museums give visitors easy ways to explore on foot.
Mogilev remains one of Belarus's main industrial and economic centres, with chemical, engineering, textile and food production, and it hosts business activity and regional events throughout the year. The city is divided into the Leninsky and Oktyabrsky districts, each with its own local character.
For travellers, Mogilev offers a quieter alternative to Minsk with authentic Belarusian culture, Dnieper views and nearby memorial sites, while its road and rail connections make it a practical stop on routes through eastern Belarus.
