About Brest
Brest is a border city in southwestern Belarus, where the Mukhavets River meets the Bug River opposite the Polish town of Terespol. Known above all for the Brest Hero Fortress, a major Soviet World War II memorial, the city blends a long frontier history with a compact, walkable centre and a busy border-crossing identity.
First mentioned in 1019, Brest has been ruled by Kievan Rus, Lithuania, Poland and Russia, and was known for centuries as Brest-Litovsk. The 1918 Treaty of Brest-Litovsk was signed in its fortress, and the site later became the focus of fierce resistance in June 1941.
Today visitors explore the Brest Fortress memorial complex, the outdoor Brest Railway Museum and the Berestye Archaeological Museum. The pedestrian Sovetskaya Street, with its evening lamplighter ritual, connects shops, cafés and restored buildings in the historic centre.
Brest is an important transport and logistics hub on the rail corridor between Europe and the former Soviet Union, with a local economy centred on engineering and food processing. About 60 km north lies Belovezhskaya Pushcha National Park, a UNESCO-listed forest famous for European bison.
With a population of about 344,000, Brest offers a manageable destination for travellers interested in wartime history, Soviet heritage and a gateway to western Belarus and nearby Poland.
