About Nakhchivan

Nakhchivan is the capital of Azerbaijan's Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic, a compact and historically layered city set along the Nakhchivanchay River in an exclave bordered by Armenia, Iran and Turkey. It is one of the region's oldest continuously settled centres and today serves as the administrative, educational and cultural heart of the republic.

The city's long history is reflected in landmarks such as the 12th-century Momine Khatun Mausoleum, designed by the architect Ajami Nakhchivani, and the Khan's Palace complex. Local tradition also links Nakhchivan with the Prophet Noah, and the city contains a mausoleum associated with that legend.

Beyond its monuments, Nakhchivan offers museums including the Nakhchivan State History Museum and the Heydar Aliyev Museum, while nearby attractions such as the Ashabi-Kahf cave, Duzdagh salt mine and Alinja Castle provide excursions into the surrounding landscape.

As the republic's main urban centre, Nakhchivan supports light industry, food processing and salt production, and it is home to Nakhchivan State University. Nakhchivan International Airport connects the exclave with Baku and offers a small number of international connections, making the city a practical base for both regional business and cultural travel.
