About Lachin
Lachin (Laçın) is a small mountain town in southwestern Azerbaijan and the administrative centre of Lachin District, part of the East Zangezur Economic Region. Set on a slope above the Hakari River and ringed by forested ridges, it serves as a gateway between Karabakh and the surrounding highlands.
The settlement was founded as Abdallar in the early 1920s, renamed Lachin and became a district centre in 1930. Between 1992 and August 2022 it was controlled by Armenian forces as Berdzor, before being returned to Azerbaijan under the 2020 ceasefire arrangements. Today the city is being rebuilt with new housing, schools, mosques and public spaces.
Lachin's appeal is mainly natural: clear mountain springs, dense forests and recreation areas along the turquoise Hakari River. Nearby heritage sites include the Aghoghlan monument complex, Damrovlu Pir, Kar Kunbez Mausoleum and Ushag Castle, while surrounding villages offer caves, waterfalls and unusual rock formations.
The town is developing as a base for ecotourism and for visits across the Karabakh and East Zangezur region. Roads connect it with Shusha, Kalbajar, Fuzuli and Baku, and Lachin International Airport opened about 30 km from the centre in May 2025.
For travellers, Lachin offers a quieter, nature-focused contrast to Shusha and other Karabakh destinations, with growing hospitality services and year-round mountain scenery appealing to both leisure visitors and business trips linked to regional reconstruction.
