About Ganja
Ganja is Azerbaijan's third-largest city and the cultural and economic hub of the country's west, set on the Ganjachay River against the foothills of the Lesser Caucasus. It combines a long, layered history with a relaxed, green city centre and a strong industrial base.
Founded in the 9th century, Ganja is one of the oldest cities in the Caucasus and the birthplace of the 12th-century poet Nizami Ganjavi. The city has carried several names over time, including Yelizavetpol and Kirovabad, before returning to Ganja in 1989, and its heritage is visible in mosques, mausoleums, fortifications and old bridges.
Key sights include the Nizami Ganjavi Mausoleum, the 17th-century Shah Abbas (Juma) Mosque, the Imamzadeh complex, the historic Khan's Garden and the unusual Bottle House. The city centre clusters around Nizami Ganjavi Square and Javad Khan Street, while the Nizami and Kapaz districts spread across the two banks of the river.
Ganja is also a manufacturing and logistics centre, with aluminium production, metallurgy, machinery, textiles and food processing shaping the local economy. Its universities, markets, tea houses and restaurants give the city a working, everyday energy, while parks and cultural venues host events throughout the year.
For travellers, Ganja serves as a gateway to Goygol Lake and the surrounding mountains as well as a destination in its own right, offering history, culture and business links in western Azerbaijan.
