About Timimoun

Timimoun is a Saharan oasis town in south-central Algeria and the capital of Timimoun Province, deep in the Gourara region at the edge of the Grand Erg Occidental. Its nickname, the Red Oasis, comes from the ochre-red pisé architecture, palm groves and dunes that glow at sunset.

The town grew around a walled ksar and served for centuries as a caravan stop on trans-Saharan trade routes, with Zenata Berber culture still visible in its music, crafts and social traditions. Ahellil, a polyphonic chant recognised by UNESCO, and the week-long Sboue festival during Mawlid are among its most distinctive cultural events.

Visitors can explore the narrow alleys of the old ksar, the shaded palm groves fed by ancient foggara irrigation galleries, and the white salt flats known as sebkhas that surround the town. Day trips lead to the ksar of Ighzer, desert cave sites and the towering dunes of the Grand Erg Occidental.

As a regional administrative and agricultural centre, Timimoun is known for date production, particularly varieties such as El H'mira and Tinasser, and for a growing desert-tourism economy built on guesthouses, local guides and camel treks. It sits within a wider Sahara route that connects the Gourara, Touat and M'zab regions.

For leisure travellers it offers culture, photography and desert landscapes, while business and administrative visitors come as the hub of the new wilaya. Its small airport links the oasis with Algiers, Oran and Constantine, making it a practical gateway to the Algerian Sahara.
