About Tébessa

Tébessa is a city in northeastern Algeria, close to the Tunisian border, and the capital of Tébessa Province. It is best known as the ancient city of Theveste, a former Roman garrison town whose well-preserved remains give the city a distinctive archaeological character.

The city is dominated by a walled Byzantine citadel with towers and gateways, while just to the north stands the Arch of Caracalla, a Roman quadrifrontal arch from 214 AD. Other notable monuments include the remains of a Roman amphitheatre, thermal baths, a temple of Minerva, and a large early Christian basilica located a short distance from the centre.

Around these historic sites, Tébessa functions as a busy regional centre where older streets, markets and administrative buildings sit alongside modern districts. Local trade in grain, sheep and esparto grass, along with nearby phosphate mining, shapes much of the city's economy and daily life.

Tébessa also has a strong craft tradition, particularly carpet weaving, and its position near the border makes it a transit point for travel between eastern Algeria and western Tunisia. The surrounding high plains and mountains offer a drier, elevated landscape quite different from Algeria's coastal cities.

For travellers, Tébessa combines Roman and Byzantine heritage with a practical regional base for exploring Algeria's eastern highlands. It appeals mainly to history-focused visitors, while its administrative role and border connections also bring business and cross-border travel.
