About Oum El Bouaghi

Oum El Bouaghi is a high-plateau town in northeastern Algeria and the administrative capital of Oum El Bouaghi Province. Set about 65 km southeast of Constantine and roughly 480 km east of Algiers, it serves as a trading and services centre for a farming region known for cereals, olives, figs and livestock.

The area has deep historical roots, from Numidian-era settlement under King Massinissa to Roman agriculture, medieval dynasties and the Ottoman beylik of Constantine. During the French colonial period the town was called Canrobert, and 19th-century colonial buildings still mark its centre before it became a wilaya in 1974.

The surrounding landscape is defined by the Sidi Rghis mountain, Djebel Bou Arrigueb forests and the wide high plains. The nearby Garaet El Tarf salt lake is one of Algeria's largest, drawing flamingos and other migratory birds in winter and spring and turning into a lunar salt landscape in summer. Hiking on Sidi Rghis, forest walks and scattered Numidian and Roman remains are the main outdoor draws.

In town, the weekly souk remains the social and commercial heart, selling grain, livestock, local honey and fresh produce. A historic mosque, modest colonial-era streets and a university give the city its working rhythm, while local cuisine features mutton couscous, chakhchoukha, trida and barley kesra.

For travellers, Oum El Bouaghi is a practical stop between Constantine and Tébessa and a gateway to the high-plateau landscape. Business visitors come mainly for the provincial administration, the university and agricultural trade, while leisure visitors use it as a calm base for nature, heritage and day trips across the region.
